2-4 Claude-Bénigne Balbastre (1727-1799), organist

Claude-Bénigne Balbastre’s playing fascinated the Paris audience so much that he was forbidden to play at the midnight mass at St Roch because the crowds of people pushing each other in order to attend his performance created a serious safety problem. He served also as organist for the Count of Provence (brother of the king, who later became Louis XVIII) and as clavecin teacher for Marie-Antoinette. In 1770 he was at the peak of his popularity. He was also well known internationally, and the English music historian Charles Burney gives a detailed description of his beautiful playing in his famous Musical Tour.

At that time, performances of organ music outside the churches had become more frequent, as reflected in the composition of concert pieces by famous organists. The appreciation of performance is also shown by the increasing number of performance indications in the scores written by composers. Engramelle’s approach to recording the playing of famous musicians has also to be seen in this historical context.
