３－１．セリネット（鳥オルガン）とは
「セリネット」とは、「スラン（serin：カナリア）」をはじめとする鳥に歌を教えるために用いられた小型の手回しオルガン。セリネットは18世紀初頭に、ロレーヌ地方ボージュ県のミルクールで初めて作られ、以後フランスで大流行する。シャルダンが1751年に描いた絵画「セリネット」（図版1）にも、女性がこの楽器を手にカナリアに歌を教えている様子がいきいきと描かれている。
セリネットは、鳥に歌を教えるのが目的なので、パイプも10本と音域も狭く、玩具にすぎないようにも見える。しかし自動オルガンとしての最低限の構造を備えているため、パイプの数とサイズを拡大すれば、同じテクニックで優れたオルガン奏者の演奏を再現することも可能である。だからアングラメルは、セリネットを自動楽器への記譜法の基本例として取り上げるのである。
ところで、鳥に歌を教えることが18世紀に流行していたことを示す、新聞広告がある：
1789年の新聞に5月14日から20日まで掲載された個人広告：「5月9日に、黄色いカナリアが逃げた。そのカナリアは《樵の歌》を歌い、時々「コレは私の友達」という言葉をしゃべる。サン・フロランタン通りに面したサン･トノレ街のドゥ・シメー公女邸に居住するコレ氏にカナリアを届けた方には12リーヴルを進呈する。」フランスの一般新聞の広告
そのカナリアが歌っていた「樵の歌」は、当時の流行歌であり、アングラメルもその著書『トノテクニー』に「樵の歌」を取り上げている。

3-1 Serinette
A serinette is a small automatic
organ used to teach melodies to serins and other songbirds. The first
serinettes were constructed in Mirecourt (Vosges, Lorraine), and they were very
popular in France. In the painting La serinette
of Jean-Baptiste-Simeon Chardin (1699-1779), a woman is teaching her serin with
her small organ.
A serinette seems to be little
more than a toy, because it has only about 10 pipes and a small range of high
tones, as convenient for teaching birds to sing. It is, however, the smallest
scale automatic organ, and if only the number and size of pipes is increased,
the performance of famous organ players can be reproduced with the same
technique. Engramelle therefore uses the serinette to show the basics of
musical notation on automatic instruments.
That the teaching of birds was
widely popular in the 18th century can be seen from the following
advertisement:

The “air du Bûcheron” that
the bird sang was a popular song of that time and is one of the pieces that is
notated in Engramelle’s Tonotechnie.
