This machine produces syncopated sequences of clicks, a different sequence every time. I built it having read Steve Reich's description of his minimalist work "Clapping Music" (1972) in his book "Writings about Music" (1974). One performer claps a basic rhythm, twelve beats in length, while the other player claps the same pattern but makes a jump of one beat after twelve bars, so the players are now one beat out of phase. After 144 bars and twelve jumps the two players are in phase again. In my machine the rhythm is somewhat longer and the jumps are of random length. The players are represented by two clicking ratchet wheels which are connected by a simple clutch. After playing for a few minutes the machine switches itself off automatically.
