講義題目:methods of analysis and comparative strategies in the reading of literary works
This course will concentrate on methods of analysis and comparative strategies in the reading of literary works. To that end, we will read fiction by mostly contemporary Japanese authors and focus on critical feminist and gender theory. We will explore not only how to do feminist literary analysis and comparative litarary criticism, but also debate the advantages and disadvantages of “theory” as a tool for examining literature, a tool beyond the usual “close reading”(精読) techniques. Intersections between feminist theory and other critical discourses (materialist, deconstructionist, psychoanalytical, etc.) should be expected. Student research interests will be taken into account when deciding texts, and details will be explained at the first class meeting. Class discussions will be in both English and Japanese.
